This is a survey of 19th-century Spanish diplomacy. Although the 19th century is often considered highly fragmented in Spanish history, the contributors to this volume show that, with regard to diplomacy, Spain followed consistent lines of activity. Spaniards have attempted to use diplomacy to further national and international objectives with mixed results. This study aims to afford insight into the political affairs of Spain while dealing directly with the events of other regions such as North Africa, Santa Domingo, Mexico, the United States, Portugal, France, Great Britain, Chile and Peru. It is also designed to make a significant contribution to the subject of diplomacy in the post-Napoleonic Mediterranean world.
