在纽约公共图书馆里，迪伦如饥似渴地从微缩胶卷上阅读1855到1865年间的报纸，《芝加哥论坛报》、《布鲁克林日报》、《宾夕法尼亚自由人》、《孟菲斯每日鹰报》、《萨凡纳每日先驱报》……奴隶制度、改革运动、反赌博联盟、童工、犯罪、禁酒、宗教复兴……各种思想针锋相对，他们却信仰同一个上帝，援引同一本《圣经》和《宪法》。报纸上的人们仿佛随时都可能爆炸，闪电会烧起来，每个人都会被烧死。黑暗的日子，派别分裂，人类被抛出历史轨道的普遍命运与人性的全部复杂性……所有这一切就像是一首长长的葬礼歌曲。年轻的迪伦尽量多地往自己的脑子里塞进这些东西，把它们锁起来放进人们看不见的地方。
