Sincerely believing in the “sin” of the intelligentsia, Ji was willing to reflect on his own ideology through the series of political movements initiated by the Party. Born a righteous and unyielding man, he gave up his original stance as a bystander and decided to join in a group to oppose the authority of some powerful yet treacherous people, which led to his years-long persecution.
During the first days, he felt unable to bear the humiliation inflicted on him and for a while thought of committing suicide (by taking sleeping pills). Fortunately, the morning when he decided to do end his life, he was dragged out by the angry crowd for another session of public humiliation, which he found himself strong enough to survive. This changed his mind about killing himself and made him determine to live on.
