【按】读余英时文集，有一个明显而强烈的感觉：作为一个以中国思想史为主业的历史学者，余英时先生对于西方的思想进展却非常的关注和熟稔，从直接与历史相关的史学思想，到社会学、人类学、政治哲学、认识哲学，等等，余著所涉及、引用和加以讨论的西方思想著作是非常广泛而丰富的。这种现象至少在国内治史的学者中应该算比较罕见，我觉得这也是使得余英时史学迥异于时流的一个重大因素。余英时年轻时曾专门对西方民主、自由等重要思想的脉络专门做过一番探究，这部分著述收录于广西师范大学的这套《余英时文集》的第六卷（还未见），这足证余先生对于西方思想的兴趣由来久矣。 余英时学术的背后始终隐现一个根本的关怀，就是通过对中（西）思想在历史中的发生、发展的史学考索来探究中国传统文化在现代化环境中的有效性和可延续性，此种关怀亦是晚清以来对传统文化有深厚感情的所有优秀学人的共同课题。我觉得，余先生之所以能对此问题做出如此丰硕而新颖的贡献，除了他深厚的国学功底和卓越的考据学能力以外，另一部分原因也是因为他对于中国文化之“对手”，即西方文化，有着真正深切的了解和始终不渝的跟进，在这方面，他确实超过了他的前辈钱穆先生和陈寅恪先生，真可以说是“青出于蓝而胜于蓝”了。 为了证明这一点，我做了一项笨活儿，把手边的这套广西师范大学出版的《余英时文集》中每卷所引的西方思想类著作辑出（不包括直接与课题内容相关的历史著作，因为那是题中应有之义，与我想说明的问题无关）。通过这个书单，可以看出余先生对西方思想哲学涉猎之深广，也可见出余氏史学背后的哲学和方法论的背景，相信对于理解余先生的学术与思想都有一定的帮助。除此之外，还有一个很实际的用途：我们不妨把它当作余先生本人开出的一张书单，这对于我们个人的选择性的阅读，绝对是一个上佳的参考。 值得注意之点：心理分析历史学(Pyschohistory), 历史写作(historical writing), 典范(paradigm)，东方主义(orientalism)... 社会思想： Max Weber(马克斯·韦伯), Economy and Society, california Univ. 1978 Amartya Sen（[印度]阿玛提亚·森）, Development As Freedom, New York: Alfred A.
