More violin today, but in a very different mode to yesterday. As a fiddle player myself, I sometimes fantasize about what it must have been like to see some of the great violinists of history in action: Fritz Kreisler, Joseph Joachim, Niccolò Paganini, Marie Hall, Jascha Heifetz and Pablo de Sarasate, who was born on this day. Celebrated for his virtuosic technique as a performer, he composed pieces of great stylistic panache that are as exhilarating to listen to as they are hair-raising to play.
Like many composers of the time, Sarasate was aware of the growing trend for incorporating traditional folk idioms into modern pieces. The title of this piece means ‘gypsy airs’, and was probably inspired by a trip he took to Budapest in 1877, where he visited the great Hungarian musician Franz Liszt, gave a few concerts, and generally soaked up the music of popular local bands. And classical music being the free-for-all melodic treasury that it is, Sarasate apparently felt no compunction about lifting wholesale one of the folk tunes that had caught his attention, the song ‘Csak egy szép lány van a világon’ (‘There’s only one lovely maid in the world’).
When a rather disgruntled Hungarian composer known as Elemér Szentirmay got in touch with Sarasate’s German publisher after the publication of Zigeunerweisen to point this out, Sarasate feigned ignorance, got his assistant to write an apologetic letter on his behalf in German, and from there on acknowledged on the manuscript the originator of the main melody: ‘used with the composer’s kind permission’. Cheeky.
