“The first clash of the two armored forces revealed yet another difference between the German and French models—the way the armored turrets were designed. The French tanks had one-man turrets. That meant that the tank commander, who should actually be the tactical leader, had, at the same time, to be the gunner and assistant gunner. In contrast, the German Panzer commanders were able to concentrate fully on their command task. A critique prepared by the 35th Panzer Regiment characterized French tank employment at Hannut as “leaderless, aimless, poorly led, tactically inferior.”
