夜读偶录 -- 庞德创译中诗

 庞德（Ezra Pound）是著名诗人兼文学评论家，奖掖后进，推挽才俊，如艾略特（T.S. Eliot）、佛洛斯特（Robert Frost）、乔伊斯（James Joyce）劳伦斯（D. H. Lawrence） 、海明威（Ernest Hemingway）等。
1920年代初，艾略特赋《荒原》（The Wasteland），初稿引康拉德（Joseph Conrad）《黑暗的心》（Heart of Darkness）Kurtz遗言，“恐怖！恐怖！”
庞德致函艾略特，论及此事：“康拉德文恐不值一引。”艾略特问道：“尊意是不用康氏引言，还是不著其名？此乃鄙人迄今所见最适合之文，颇可阐释。”庞德回复：“引康拉德文，悉听尊便，难道鄙人会妒忌其桂冠？”结果，艾略特弃用康拉德文，而摘录罗马作家Petronius的Satyricon，并改写但丁（Dante）颂十二世纪诗人Arnaut Daniel言，呈献庞德。
庞德最为世人称道者，是发起意象派诗歌运动，其诗论精辟，赋诗、译诗也高妙。
1913年，庞德在独立评论The New Freewoman发表The Serious Artist（严肃艺术家），论及艺术、文学与诗皆科学，如同化学。第三节《情感与诗篇》曰：
世人或以为，艺术之魂在乎气韵生动，颇似电流或放射，豁然贯通之力，一如喷泉，从晶莹砂砾喷涌，湍流不息，引人遐想。
世人尝问：诗与散文有何区别？窃以为，此问几无用处。
笔者以为，诗较散文更具活力，然相对而言，如谈温度孰热孰冷。同样，言某篇散文“颇有诗意”，是为赞扬，而说某诗“类似散文”，则意在批评，此“诗”义同“胡扯！胡说！！废话！！！”意义在于“文笔生动”。
文笔生动，因才思洋溢，文字无活力，则易于收放，除非文字不甚沉闷，而作者不想使文字晓畅。
由于叙事言辞均为日常用语，词义含混，因而，以科学精确性写“散文与诗”，几无可能，除非撰述“写作技巧”总论，定义词语，一如化学专论定义术语，因此，凡诗论不仅乏味，且不精确，毫无用处。
所谓文笔精妙，即意到笔随，行文清晰，简约，精炼。此说不为惜墨，或炼句如塔西陀，言简而理尽。然而，即便两句常比双关语单句易懂，作者也亟于表述，任有万般理由，或并非所愿。
In a Station of the Metro是庞德意象派名诗，两行十四字：
The apparition of these faces in the crowd; 
 Petals on a wet, black bough.
描绘巴黎协和广场地铁站一瞬间：人影幢幢，不时闪现丽人，犹如黑枝上片片花瓣。
诗行排列似借鉴日本俳句，表明庞德探索东方文化。
庞德穷其半生（1917-1959），创作史诗Cantos（《诗章》），仿但丁《神曲》、荷马《伊利亚特》、奥维德《变形记》，诗章糅杂，诠释神明、万象、乾坤、东方文化，以及儒家思想“诚”与“正”。《诗章》第四十九首述及潇湘八景诗画（参见叶维廉著《庞德与潇湘八景》）。
庞德尝翻译并创译中国古诗，颇有新意。汉武帝刘彻因思李夫人，赋《落叶哀蝉曲》：
罗袂兮无声，玉墀兮尘生，虚房冷而寂寞，落叶依于重扃，望彼美之女兮，安得感余心之未宁。
诗经英国汉学家Herbert A. Giles（翟理斯）翻译，为西人所知。
Gone 
The sound of rustling silk is stilled, 
With dust the marble courtyard filled; 
No footfalls echo on the floor,
Fallen leaves in heaps block up the door... 
For she, my pride, my lovely one is lost 
And I am left, in hopeless anguish tossed.
原诗及译文诗韵平平，经庞德创译，遂成名诗。后三句改写借助意象；落叶翩跹，正是埋香处，湿叶黏重扃。

The rustling of the silk is discontinued
Dust drifts over the courtyard,
There is no sound of footfall, and the leaves 
Scurry into heaps and lie still,
And she the rejoicer of the heart is beneath them:
A wet leaf that clings to the threshold.

庞德创译《秋扇怨》，意象入诗，凝练为三行，如钱钟书先生言：躯壳换了一个，而精神姿致（soul; spirit）依然故我。
秋扇怨 班婕妤 
新制齐纨素，鲜洁如霜雪。
裁为合欢扇，团团似明月。
出入君怀袖，动摇微风发。
常恐秋节至，凉飙夺炎热。
弃捐箧笥中，恩情中道绝。
