In the next moment, the mind chooses and adds its own condition to the previous moment. It adds to the quality or takes away from the quality of the previous moment and then passes away, and the effect is passed on to the next mind. Every mind starts with something—that’s the condition. But in the present moment, that mind has the opportunity to make its contribution before it passes away. When everything is conditioned, it means there is a stream of cause and effect coming in to play: it is called becoming, or samsara. In the present moment, there is choice, or free will, and if in that moment’s conditioning there is enough wisdom present, then that choice can be a wise one. When wisdom is right there with awareness, it adds weight to any decision that needs to be made. Thirst is just thirst, nothing else; it is nature doing its job, letting us know what the body requires. This is not to say it is wrong to experience something pleasant; it is just that we often make decisions with no awareness present, which allows the defilements easy access to our minds.
