Short sentences always produce a light but definite feeling to the readers. It is kind of assertion. Definitely, Ishigami was a teacher, and his major was maths - so you see I may use the conjuction 'and' but here the translator did not. This is the very initial statement about Ishigami's life, his tragedy [although it seems to be difficult to understand by those Western readers], and all of his motivation. What if he was not a math teacher? Who knows. The translation follows a trend or a style called minimalism. I read the subject, the predicate and then the object, one sentence and again. Higashino is more like a light novel writer, and his original text is easy too - I never finished the reading [or, exactly, guessing] of DoSX, but I am now reading Detective Galileo - the translation preserve the original style. Maybe it is too easy for the readers because the native authors always insert the two or three-line sentences in their narrative, but at least I feel it Higashino. That's nice enough.
