A symptom is any characteristics of a person's actions, thoughts, or feelings that could be a potential indicator of a mental disorder, and a syndrome is a constellation of interrelated symptoms manifested by a given individual. According to DSM-IV, a syndrome is considered to be a mental disorder if, and only if, it satisfies the following three criteria:
1. it involves a clinically significant detriment
2. it derives from an internal force
