At the first sight of the title, The Book Thief, habitually I made a guess at its theme--an inspirational story. So there might be a girl or boy who is crazy about reading, but too poor to afford books. By absolute necessity, he/she restores to stealing to indulge the strong desire of books. Then a conclusion may be drawn like this: If permitted, we readers are suggested to be exposed to readings as much as possible. However, when I browsed through the book, some words catching my eyes, Death, Nazi and Jews, for instance, had cast doubt on my conjecture. Eventually, my assumption was resoundingly overturned by the further reading--not that simple as I have predicted, the theme is deep and far-reaching.Firstly, indeed there was a girl obsessed in reading, and it was also true that her poverty as well as thirst for knowledge descended her to a book thief. However, this immoral behavior turned to be innocuous in terms of the whole story. so, what is the major idea of the story? The plotline is how did a Jewish survive with the help of a German family, in line with several books threading in the story. Death, the narrator of the story in this book, had witnessed the coexistence of ugly and glorious human nature during that period. The story was set in WWII when Holocaust was wreaking havoc in Nazi Germany. Against such background, a tragedy set in. It was a stage when 'Heil, Hitler' was on the Nazi's lips and Star of David became horrible symbol. So that disastrous stage even left Jews no place to hide, and Max was one of the countless victims. Under the cover of his families, Max escaped and went to Lisel's family to refuge. Hiding in a basement, not seeing the sun for years, and being in a state of anxiety , all were tormenting him all the time. Similar and bigger disasters were pervasive since Kristallnacht. Thankfully, the glorious human nature was not vanished by that ruthless age. Lisel's family accepted Max, a bomb constituting threats to them at that time. In the help of these books stolen, Lisel comforted many disturbed souls. In my view, Lisel's theft was trivial if in contrast to another big thief--war. All through the story, he kept snatching things from others. In the story, it grabbed Jews' right of survivor ,Mayor's wife's smile, soldier's arms, and legs, and Lisel's parents and neighbors' life, to mention only. Since ancient times, he, the war, is a violent theft. Also, the power of words is fully displayed in the story. On one hand, book, a kind of spiritual food, had fed many people in hunger; on the other hand, a dictator was using this tool to incite nationals to start violent attack to Jewish. In conclusion, it is a book worth reading. But since the Death is the first person of the story, we are able to foresee the plot development to some extent by the mouth of the Death. However, on the whole, this didn't not interrupt my interest to finish the book.
