the first thing catches my attention is its mention of the similarity between "theater" and the ancient Roman square. I am interested in the topic of the role of "theater" in western cities for long, though not yet seriously seeking for that. anyway, it deserves attention. the second thing i think interesting is the preface by Saarinen, see what he thought Sitte's theory was important. he mentioned the aspect of usefulness, that's why he always regarded architecture as a deal, and that's what he influenced adolf loos. next what i care is about the background of Sitte, meaning the education background, what he held as beauty (did it have something to do with alois riegel? since it was what happened in the fin-du-siecle in Wien). besides, he surely founded his judgement of beauty on the basis of perspective and something else (what was the role of english picturesque in this point? and what was the role of his research objects, meaning the German and Italian medieval towns?), which i think might have something to do with Corbusier's view on city. if city could be viewed from the way of sight, why not creating a new city look since he had figured out new ways of looking? and the last thing, i do find many evidences in Sitte's book that can be the origin of the later research work done by the Japanese.
