Most of the increase in Chinese consumption over the next decade will come from urban areas, not from China's700,000 villages. In China's cities, income levels are higher and there are many more opportunities to spend. Hundred of millions of rural people will become consumers over the coming decades - but only when they leave the farm the start to lead urban lives. For consumption to become a genuine engine of economic growth, China must look to its cities.
