E. de Strycker and S. R. Slings, Plato's Apology of Socrates: A Literary and Philosophical Study with a Running Commentary (Leiden: E. J. Brill, 1994), p. 241:
ἐμαυτοῦ ἐπελαθόμην: not ‘I all but forgot who I was’ (Burnet), which would imply that Socrates nearly was persuaded that he was guilty. In fact, ἐπιλανθάνομαι ἐμαυτοῦ is rather an equivalent of ἐξίσταμαι (Menex. 235a7; see Chapter II 30 and n.8) and is tantamount to ‘to get beside oneself’ pr even ‘to become entranced’; the reverse process is ἀναμιμνῄσκομαι ἐμαυτοῦ (ib. c3) ‘to recover oneself’. This has already been noticed by Th. Meyer 115.
