Chapter 5 P39(Kafka comes to the library) As I relax on the sofa and gaze around the room a thought hits me: this is exactly the place I've been looking for all my life. A little hideaway in some sinkhole somewhere. I'd always thought of it as a secret, imaginary place, and can barely believe that it actually exists. I close my eyes and take a breath, and the wonder of it all settles over me like a gentle cloud.
hideaway. =========================== Chapter 16 P157(Johnnie Walker started to kill cats and forced Nakata to watch) "You have to look!" Johnnie Walker commanded. "That's another one of our rules. Closing your eyes isn't going to change anything. Nothing's going to disappear just because you can't see what's going on. In fact, things will be even worse the next time you open your eyes. ..."
=========================== Chapter 17 P169(Oshia talking to Kafka) "That's how stories happen - with a turning point, an unexpected twist. There's only one kind of happiness, but misfortune comes in all shapes and sizes. It's as Tolstoy said: happiness is an allegory, unhappiness a story. ..."
----------------------------------------------- P173Oshima reaches out and lays a hand on my knee in a totally natural gesture, "Kafka, in everybody's life there's a point of no return. And in very few cases, a point where you can't go forward any more. And when we reach that point, all we can do is quietly accept the fact. That's how we survive."
=========================== Chapter 37 P377(Oshima took Kafka to the cabin again) "But you want to see her, don't you?" I don't reply. I'm not sure how to express it, but the answer isn't hard to guess. "I do feel kind of sorry for you," Oshima says, "but as I said, I think you two shouldn't see each other for a while." "But I might never see her again." "Perhaps," Oshima admits, after giving it some thought. "This is pretty obvious, but until things happen, they haven't happened. And often things aren't what they seem." "But how does Miss Saeki feel?" Oshima narrows his eyes and looks at me. "About what?" "I mean - if she knows she'll never see me again, does she feel the same about me as I feel about her?" Oshima grims. "Why are you asking me this?" "I have no idea, which is probably why I'm asking you. Loving somebody, wanting them more than anything - it's all a new experience. The same with having somebody want me." "I imagine you're confused and don't know what to do." I nod. "Exactly." "You don't know if she shares the same strong, pure feelings you have for her," Oshima says. I shake my head. "It hurts to think about it." Oshima's silent for a time as he gazes at the forest, eyes narrowed. Birds are flitting from one branch to the next. His hands are clasped behind his head. "I know how you feel," he finally says. "But this is something you have to work out on your own. Nobody can help you. That's what love's all about, Kafka. You're the one having those wonderful feelings, but you have to go it alone as you wander through the dark. Your mind and body have to bear it all. All by yourself."
=========================== Chapter 43 P430"That's the reality of it. It did happen," the boy named Crow says. "You were hurt badly, and those scars will be with you for ever. I feel sorry for you, I really do. But think of it like this: it's not too late to recover. You're young, you're tough. You're adaptable. You can patch up your wounds, lift up your head and move on. ..."
I wish it would never be too late to recover. For this, I will also have to make myself tough, so that I will not fall ill or get hurt physically when I do not want to.
