1978年11月邓小平访问东南亚到了新加坡，李光耀总理的一段回忆记录了当时二人当时的一段对话。李光耀的话看似鼓舞，但作为中国领导人的邓听来恐怕只能心酸，以沉默回应。“……我答道他们绝对可以（从文革中）恢复过来并比新加坡做得更好，毕竟我们是福建广东没有产业不识字农民的子孙，他们是守在故乡的学者、官吏、文人的后裔呀”
He invited me to visit China again. I said I would when China had recovered from the Cultural Revolution. That, he said, would take a long time.
