The 5 steps close-up (iterative)
1. Setting goals
· avoiding setting goals based on what you think you can achieve
· Your goal is always to make the best possible choices, knowing that you will be rewarded if you do.
· Goal-setting is best done by those who are good at big-picture conceptual thinking, synthesizing, visualizing, and prioritizing
· Questions to ask yourself
i. How well do you know what you want most out of life?
ii. What are your most important goals?
iii. Are you good at setting your goals?
iv. How confident are you that your assessment of your ability to set goals is right?
v. If you are confident of your self-assessment, why should you be confident?
2. Identifying and not tolerating problems
· Come up with a plan/design and execute by doing tasks
· Most problems are potential improvements screaming at you. The more painful the problem, the louder it is screaming.
· Distinguish big problems from small ones
· Be very precise in specifying your problems
· Don’t confuse problems with causes
i. How good are you at perceiving problems?
ii. How confident are you that your assessment of your ability to perceive problems is right?
iii. If you are confident of your self-assessment, why should you be confident?
iv. How much do you tolerate problems?
v. How confident are you that your assessment of how much you tolerate problems is right?
vi. If you are confident of your self-assessment, why should you be confident?
3. Diagnosing the problems
· You will be much more effective if you focus on diagnosis and design rather than jumping to solutions
· You must get to the root causes
· The most important qualities for successfully diagnosing problems are logic, the ability to see multiple possibilities, and the willingness to touch people’s nerves to overcome the ego barriers that stand in the way of truth.
4. Designing the plan (determining the solutions)
· Ability to visualize and a practical understanding of how things really work.
5. Doing the tasks
· Know each day what you need to do and have the discipline to do it
· Establish clear benchmarks. Have someone other than yourself objectively measure if you are doing what you planned
· People who are good at this stage are self-disciplined, proactive, and result-oriented
· Gotta push through
* If the process is working, goals will change much more slowly than designs, which will change more slowly than tasks. Designs and tasks can be moditied or changed often, but changing goals frequently is usually a problem because achieving them requires a consistent effort.
