Critchley的核心态度是avoid sectarianism, 主张回到problem of 'the two cultures'- scientific explanation vs. humanistic interpretation; empirical-scientific-Benthamite-Carnapian vs. hermeneutic-romantic-Coleridgean-Heideggerian, 避免走scientism和obscurantism两个极端,从文化病理学 (cultural pathology) 角度理解 the two cultures problem, 关注历史但不要人物崇拜,专注解决遗留的哲学问题,如gap between knowledge and wisdom.
他具体identify的问题是the problem of philosophical modernity:
他给的diagnosis & solution是 avoid the error of believing that we can resolve through causal or causal-sounding explanation what demands phenomenological clarification.
对我们这些熟稔科学理论态度的人而言,一种前理论的生活经验 (pre-theoretical level of human experience) 并非唾手可得,现象学由此进入视野,引导我们重新认识看待世界 (relearn the world in all its palpable and practical presence). 与Susan Neiman在Why grow up?
