I take Aristotle to be one of the more tough-minded, rationalistic thinkers the West produced prior to the emergence of the modern post-Cartesian systems. He spawned in Averroës the most anti-religious and rationalistic thinker of the Middle Ages. He is the virtual inventor of the principle of causality, the causal thinker par excellence in the ancient world.
