I suppose Velasquez was a better painter than El Greco, but custom stales one's admiration for him: the Cretan, sensual and tragic, proffers the mystery of his soul like a standing sacrifice. The artist, painter, poet, or musician, by his decoration, sublime or beautiful, satisfies the aesthetic sense; but that is akin to the sexual instinct, and shares its barbarity: he lays before you also the greater gift of himself.
当我读到"proffers the mystery of his soul like a standing sacrifice"的时候，突然之间，我仿佛可以体会到艺术家在给大家奉上自己作品时心里所怀的强烈感情：他们热情地向大家展现自己的作品、以及隐藏在这些作品背后的自己的个性，渴望自己的表达被理解和接受。这种赤城就是人们向神灵奉上自己最好的祭品时的赤城。从某种程度上来说，理解作品和理解作者已经是不可分割的事情。
但是我还不是很确定"but that is akin to"这一句中的"that"所指代的对象。一种解释可能是"that"指代了前文的"aesthetic sense"。但是我认为"that"指代的是前文的"by his decoration"，也就是“艺术家制作自己的作品”这种行为。或许毛姆想说：有天赋的艺术家希望通过作品去表达的欲望，就像人类本身的性欲望一样有着“崇高的或者美丽的”[1]一面，但也有着“粗野狂暴”[2]的一面。

这段话让我想起了之前看的中央音乐学院副院长周海宏老师的古典音乐科普讲座。他讲了两个核心观点：音乐何须懂；音乐可以懂。展开讲来就是：不同的人听同一段音乐可以有不同的感受，没有必要拘泥于所谓的“官方理解”，要解放自己的感官，充分体验和肯定音乐带给你的感觉。与此同时，不同风格的音乐还是会给人大体上一致的感受。比如低沉的旋律会让人沉静、忧伤；高亢的旋律会让人昂扬、激动。这些又是音乐可以被听懂的元素。我想，绘画也会带给观众类似的体验。

很多人都渴望不平凡，渴望成为传奇，可惜日常生活的琐碎和自身的庸碌，导致大部分人最终必然平凡。这种时候，人们就只能依靠浪漫主义的幻想去慰藉自己被庸碌所折磨已久的身心。但是，这未必不是一件好事。《大鱼》里把自己的身世不断“传奇化”的老爸，把一个普通推销员的生活讲得跌宕起伏、惊奇有趣，让我相信：有趣的生活是存在的，只是需要一个有趣的灵魂去创造。

我看的傅惟慈的翻译版本中对应的译文如下：
瓦尔特·饶利爵士之所以永远珍留在人们记忆里是因为他把披风铺在地上，让伊丽莎白女皇踏着走过去，而不是因为他把英国名字带给了许多过去人们从来没有发现的国土；一个玩世不恭的哲学家在想到这件事时肯定会哑然失笑的。
原文中的"the English name"被翻译成“英国名字”。但是根据上下文，我认为这里的" the English name"应该指的是" the Virgin Queen"这个称号。首先原文中说"the English name"被带到了" undiscovered countries"，而根据我对那个时候的文化的了解，英国的人们出去探险的时候都会打着女王的旗号。正是这些人，把女王的名号带到了那些原本根本不知道她的国家。因此我觉得" the English name"是为了避免重复使用" the Virgin Queen"而出现的同位语。
