Book 21 16.8 CHARACTER OF CONSTANTIUS

文中一段对快乐的阐述(P231),摘录如下
The same lesson is enforced by Cicero in a letter to Nepos in which he reprobates the cruelty of Caesar. 'Happiness,' he writes, 'is nothing but success in noble actions, or in other words, the good fortune that brings worthy aims to fruition. The man who has no such aims cannot be happy. It follows that no happiness was to be found in the wicked and cirminal designs nursed by Caesar. In my opinion Camillus was happier in exile than Manlius would have been at the same period if he had achieved the object of his wishes and made himself king.' Heracleitus of Ephesus teaches the same truth when he tells us that, though the changes and chances of life have sometimes put outstanding men at the mercy of weaklings and cowards, the truest glory is won when a man in power totally subdues his cruel and savage and angry impulses and erects in the citadel of his soul a splendid memorial of his victory over himself.
