They paid the ultimate price for my authenticity. They gave up their community, their careers, their language, their onw names. These were the steep taxes they paid to make a better life for me. Assimilating in the ways my parents did can inviate accusations. Changing your name and hiding your accent could be seen as passive or feraful gestures. But my parent' immigrant experience reveals the great reserves of bravery and pride they had in order to survive in a new country with no familiar community of support. They traded in their names for the freedom and privilege I experience every day.

    p36

Telling people what they wanted to hear was disempowering. Truly understanding the deep effects that this self-hatred was having on my soul was liberating.

Decoding people's expectations and then shape-shifting into the version of myself that pleased them the most became my superpower.

Shape-shifting was a useful skill to possess as an aspiring actress, but it didn't stop people from labeling and categorizing me.

I believe the culture shape identity and defines possibility; that it teaches us who we are, what to believe, and how to dream. We should all be able to look at the world around us and see a reflection of our true lived experiences.

    p 59 Roxane Gay

I also understood that, for my mother, and in our culture, boundaries do not really exist. Or perhaps, more accurately, boundaries exist but they are ignored and trespassed at will with, generally, the best of intentions.

A closed door meant we were tryingto shut our parents out of our lives when they wanted nothing more than to have their lives wholly entwined with ours.

Even when I rejected my parents, they were there, they were steadfast in their devotion and deterimination to love a child who did not want to be loved by them, by anyone. They loved me through the worst things I've endured and the wrose ways I've behaved toward them. They loved me throiugh my tumultuous tweens and twenties.

    p 247

I don't want other kids to feel the way I did - to want so badly to be more Latino than I felt I actually was. Even in the early days of my career, I thought I was supposed to prove myself. But how can you be more of something that you just inherently are? You can't. And you shouldn't. Instead, you just do and do you well. Regardless of what that looks like. I've learned you can be unapologetically pround of your culture, your heritage, and your heart, and you can celebrate everything about yourself without justification.
