Newton and Leibniz both came to understand that the way to solve this problem was to consider the process of continuous change as the accretion of an infinite number of infinitesimally small moments. Their system of calculus was the scalpel that allowed scientists and mathematicians to carve time and space int those minute fractions and then to reassemble the parts into a new and more comprehensible whole. Calculus became the essential mathematical tool of the industrial revolution, its methods enabling engineers to harness steam power and astronomers to chart the orbits of the planets and economists to codify the laws of supply and demand that underlay mass production and global trade. To Treisman, sitting alone with those library books in his bedroom in Flatbush almost three hundred years later, calculus seemed not just a powerful mechanical instrument but also a sublime intellectual creation. Underneath the prosaic rules and formulas that he had helped Harriet memorize, he saw a mathematical system of elegance and complexity, a new way of looking at the world up close. And for a long time, that's all calculus was to Treisman: a beautiful diversion. An art project, painted in numbers.

  • AFTER THE WAR

The process of identity formation in late adolescence is real and genuine, and how it takes place really does have a profound effect on how people's lives turn out: how happy they will be; how well they will negotiate the challenges of work and family and friendship and community. But still, it is useful, sometimes, when contemplating the meaning of college, to remember the economist's cold-eyed perspective. It lets us strip away, for a moment, all of the culturally freighted language we tend to favor, about snobbery and passion and dignity, and to remember this: the basic reason that communities and nations establish education systems is to help their young people accumulate the skills they need to succeed in life.

  • GETTING AN A

epsilon-delta proofs - a tool that allows mathematicians to determine and demonstrate whether a function is continuous at a certain point. Two reasons for the professor to spend weeks on them: the first was that Treisman thought it would benefit his students later on if they learned now how to dig into calculus in a deep and fundamental way. The proofs weren't particular helpful if your goal was just to solve one formulaic calculus problem after another, but they were instrumental, in understanding what calculus was - how the arcane rules and theorems students were memorizing reflected the real world of movement and change. The second reason was the very fact of their difficulty. He understood that doing complex proofs was stressful and disorienting, especially for underprepared students. That disruption is important. Part of what Ivonne was confronting in those moments was two intertwined stories of mobility. One was the American story of social mobility - and particularly, the story of social mobility through higher education. It doesn't matter where you come from, that story goes; a college education will set you on a path to success. The other was the story of math mobility: math skill, is not innate; with hard work and good instruction, almost anyone van master even a complex subject like calculus.
