Though they go unquestioned, these images should not be accepted at face value simply because their propagators seem to have pure motives. Nor should my own positive portraits of black men establish my own innocence in such a way as to cause my observations to go unquestioned. None of these samples of black men, including my own, can be regarded as typical, but there is no doubt that the sociological views of the black community I have criticized accord mainly with evidence derived from selections based on pre-existing, popular images. The focus is on males who can be found hanging out on street comers and in blues bars, among other places. While the extainly do exist in the ghetto, there should be a strong presump community without compelling evidence. The types of male pressive styles described by ethnographers in these spots certion against generalizing such findings to the larger black public gatherings found at Valois serve to suggest, not that other studies are dead wrong, but that the black male is sufficiently diverse that there are some types within this population that whites should not only learn about, but can learn from as well. In this sense, the lapse of ethnography in not capturing this population has been a failure of the collective enterprise, rather than the shortcoming ofany individual observer.

Shelby Steele's words deserve repeating: "Once in- flated we are entitled; we are in fact licensed to go after the power our innocence tells us we deserve."
"Do they have homes?" Would the individual who asked have felt any better if he had known about my own lack of sen-sitivity in the bookstore? Probably not. Like many Americans,he holds himself up to such high standards that it would have been irrelevant to him. Like many Americans, he wishes to think of himself as a "good" person. But I had no right to let that conversation end with the impression that I was somehow less guilty than he was. When we stop trying to feel good about ourselves, or to increase our own power by asserting our innocence, we can begin to look for answers by searching for truth.
