Inexplicable sorrows await all of us. That was her essential point. Life isn't some narcissistic game you play online. It all matters --- every sin, every regret, every afflication. As proof, she offered an account of her own struggle to reckon with a cruelty she'd absorbed before she was old enough even to understand it.

It's striking that Sugar was born on the Internet, that shadow wolrd to which people apply with a need to escape from their true selves, to remake their identities on the cheap, to shine their bottons in public. The Internet can be many things, of course. Too often it's a cesspool of distraction, a place where we indulge in the modern sport of snark and schadenfreude, building the case for our own bigotries, where we mock and thereby dismiss the suffering of others.

She understands that attention is the first and final act of love, and that the ultimate deindling resource in the human arrangement isn't cheap oil or portable water or even common sense, but mercy.

Love is the feeling we have for those we care deeply about and hold in high regard. It can be light as the hug we give a friend or heavy as the sacrifices we make for our children. It can be romantic, platonic, familial, fleeting, everlasting, conditional, unconditional, imbued with sorrow, stocked by sex, sullied by abuse, amplified by kindness, twisted by betrayal, deepened by time, darkened by difficulty, leavened by generosity, nourished by humor, and "loaded with promises and commitments" that we may or may not want to keep.

You will never stop loving your daughter. You will never forget her. You will always know her name. But she will always be dead. Nobody can intervene and make that right and nobody will. Nobody can take it back with silience or push it away with words. Nobody will protect you from your suffering. You can't cry it away or eat it away or starve it away or walk it away or punch it away or even therapy it away. It's just there, and you have to survive it. You have to endure it. You have to live through it and love it and move on and be better for it and runs as far as you can in the direction of your best and happiest dreams across the bridge that was built by your own desire to heal....the genuine healing, the actual real down-on-your-knees-in-the-mud change -- is entirely and absolutely up to you.

At night after I made love to this man I would lie beside him and cry because I knew that I loved him and that I couldn't bear to stay with him because I wasn't ready to love only one person yet and I knew that if I left him I would die of a broken heart and I would kill him of a broken heart too and it would be over for me when it came to love because there would never be another person who I'd love as much as I loved him or who loved me as much as he loved me or who was as sweet and sexy and cool and compassionate and good through and through.
    英语里面也有这样的长句子。。。。

Humans are beautifully imperfect and complex. We're horny, ass-saving, ego-driven drug friends, among other, more noble things.

His life is like your life and my life and all the lives of all the people who are reading these words right now. It's a rolling stew of fear and need and desire and love and he hunger to be loved. And mostly, it's the latter.

When bad things happen, often the only way back to wholeness is to take it all apart.
