Can there, nevertheless, be a romantic geograhy? Can it be argued that there is need for one since much of human life is in fact driven by passion -- by the desire to reach what is out of reach or even beyond reach?

As with "darkness" and "light", "high" and "low" may be reversed in value. Thus, in both ancient Rome and modern Chicago, high-rise tenement building provide housing for the poor, whereas villas and mansions close to the ground are residences for the rich.

Professors who take their calling seriously do not seek to please but to teach, and what they teach is not only useful knowledge but knowledge that was once called "wisdom", garnered from Mount Olympus.

The dream house is a vertical structur with a pitched roof. Its three levels are attic, living room, and cellar. Attic is the place for the dreamer and poet. In dreams, one always goes up to the attic, which to Freudians, stands for the superego. The living room is the public and social self, the place where one makes one's worldly plans. It stands for the ego. The cellar is the dark ground of being, the place of the furnace that fuel the passionate self. In dreams, one always goes down into the dark cellar -- the id.

Where might one find the thinnest partition, the sharpest contrast between order and chaos, civilization and primitivity, in today's world? Because flying has become commonplce, one might think it is between the interior of an airplane and the space outside. Inside a plane I can sit calmlyin a padded seat and read a magzine while occasionally glancing through the window at the splendid skyscrape of fluffy clouds, lit by the late afternoon sun. But outside is instant death, from which I am seperated by a mere plate of glass.

Civilization encourages individuals to stand out, their thoughts and deeds to be recognized and recorded. Writing helps the process along. At first used by religion to regulate worship, then by adminstrators of government and business to keep records and facilitate cooperation, when writing eventually came to be used by private individuals, it enabled them to not only record but elaborate on their experiences as well as those of others.

Of the many romancers of the desert,Lawrence is undoubtedly the best known, if only through David Lean's much acclaimed movie of his life, made in 1962. In hindsight, even earlyin life, Lawrence showed three traits that made him iconic. They were asceticism, a liking for open space, and a chivalrous temperament.

The economic reason justifies itself. Even so, one might wonder why so much effort was expended to acquire something nonessential, such as the spices of India. As for reasons such as pride, vainglory, patriotism, we accept them only because we are part of Western civilization. To someone of another civilization, polar adventures could seem pure madness.

From one point of view, home is the necessary secure base and point of departure for the adventurer; from another, venturing into the unknown tends to exaggerate the goodness of home.

Family, home, community -- these concrete, down-to-earth experiences of goodness -- are anchorage, the source of stablity, for the more abstract, mind-direct, ethereal-aesthetic satisfactions of romantic quests. Home stands for life. Romantic quest? Whatever it is, it is not rumpled bedsheets or the aroma of freshly baked bread. Can it be -- can part of it be -- the appeal of death?
