    We lieve in a mterialistic culture, and hormones cannot be seen nor touched. [...] Unfortunately, some doctors, when they do not understand or do not know how to help with a problem, respond by denying the validity of the problem altogether. [...] But they interfere with quality of life, which is a fancy way to say that life stops being pleasurable. Ultimately, the function of healting is to bring back the joy of life.

    However, this should be based on facts, not scare talk. [...] We tend to think of ourselves as made of our thoughts, emotions, and experiences. And we are. But we are also made up of chemicals, including hormones. [...] Admiting that our chemicals affect how we think and feel does not deny free will. On the contrary, we can better control our destinies when we are more conscious of the chemical tides of our bodies.

    Whether a man or woman is gay or straight, for example, is something residing in the brain; it has nothing to do with testosterone levels.

    Human life is based upon regularities. Day and night, the seasons, weekends following upon fives days of work, all help us attune our bodies to the demands of life. The problem is, of course, that external demands rarely coincide with biological rhythms.

    First, we need to define terms since they are used loosely in casual conversation. "Cycle" or "menstrual cycle" refers to the entire four-week (usually) duration from the beginning of one bleeding episode to the begining of the next. "Period", "menstrual period," or "menstruation" refers to the time when bleeding is occurring. A cycle lasts about twenty-eight days, while a period lasts about five. [...] Explaining symptoms away as stress is basically a medical cop out. [...] The real stress when this happends is frustration at not getting an explanation and precious time lost because the real cause was ignored. [...] The most mood-friendly pills are Yasmin, Yaz, Mircette, and Ovcon 35.

    Friends may not notice or out of politeness pretend that they can't see any change. Few doctors are trained to properly examine the hair and scalp, and so most cannot recognize the early stages of hormonal hair loss. THE WARNING SIGNS OF HORMONAL HAIR LOSS - losing more than 100 hairs a day, thinning at the temples, crown, and vertex. Widening of your part or thinning of your ponytail, scalp becoming visible on top, your hairdresser no longer thins your hair when you have it cut, Itchines, burning, or sores on your scalp, Presence of other hormonal skin changes: persistent acne, increased facial and body hair, Irregular periods, Difficulty controlling weight. [...] Recognizing that hair loss is real is the first step; next is to determine what kind of alopecia it is. There are three important terms that apply to common forms of female hair loss: androgenic alopecia (AGA, also referred to as androgenetic alopecia); telogen effluvium (TE); and alopecia areata. [...] the cause was not testosterone but falling levels of estrogen. [...] Somw women need more estrogen than others to maintain abundant hair.
    CLUES TO HORMONAL CAUSES OF ALOPECIA: Signs of Low Estrogen: - Onset in late thirties or after; - Perimenopausal symptoms, even quite midle ones, such as hot flashes or vaginal dryness; - Being very slender; - High level of aerobic exercise; - Light periods (if not on birth control pills); - Dry or delicate skin; - Fine, dry hair
    Signs of Testosterone Problems: - Onsite between teens and mid-thirties; - Oily scalp, hair, and/or skin; - Itchy scalp; - Acne; - Increased facial and/or boday hair; - Being overweight; - Periods that are irregular but often heavy

    Spironolactone 螺内酯 minoxidil 米诺地尔

    The best way to minimize spread onto the face is to apply it an hour or two before bed, so it will be absorbed before your head moves around on the pillow during sleep.

    Hair care 总结起来:1- 好好洗头发,洗头发不会掉头发;2- 能不扎头发就不要扎头发;3- 如果头发出油或者氧,用抗皮脂溢出(antiseborrhea)洗发水,不然就随便用;护发素可以用;4- 用低温档吹头法;5- 梳头发可以但要很温柔;6- 提到了两个产品:neutrogena t-gel洗发水和toppik

    THE BASIC TESTS FOR ALOPECIA, HIRSUTISM, AND ACNE: Total and free testosterone (the most important), DHEA-S (elevated levels may add to your body's testosterone); FSH and prolactin (needed only if your periods are irregular or you may be approaching perimenopause/menopause); Estradiol, the main estrogen (helpful in some situations to assess estrogen status. generally not necessary nor helpful if you are under forty-five and have regular cycles, are taking an OC, or are clearly postmenopausal); TSH (the most sensitive test for thyroid function and usually the only one necessary); blood count (CBC) and chemistry profiel (part of any health evaluation) Iron (deficiency may contribute to alopecia)

    本书我最认可的大概是医生这种highly individualised cure approach的自觉。

    We have seen how testosterone, while it is good for bones and for sex, is not so good for skin and hair. [...] Unfortunately, this mechanism is so delicately balanced that hormonally vulnerable women may get the worst of both - enough testosterone for sex may be too much for hair.
