The human life is full of differences. At the same time, there are resemblances to be identified among this hectic amount of differences. Foucault finds that resemblances among the differences tend to be rationalized, and to be formulated according to the rationalization. Reflecting on his book The Order of Things, Foucault states “I wanted to write a history of order, to state how a society reflects upon resemblances among things and how differences between things can be mastered, organized into networks, sketched out according to rational schemes”(Foucault, 1998 , p. 261). Foucault further theorizes that modern knowledge can be traced in the reformation of discourse. The discourse of modern knowledge, though delineated with categories and divisions per subjects, is unified. The modern society discourses, along with knowledge built in them, are homogeneously objectified and rationally structured. In order to counteract the unities of knowledge, he emphasizes the necessity to recognize rupture, discontinuity, and stagnation in the discourse. “Once these immediate forms of continuity are suspended, an entire field is set free”(Foucault, 1971, p. 26). He establishes three formations of discourse that should be cautioned. First, differences are only mapped as “juxtaposition, coexistence, or interaction of heterogeneous elements”(Foucault, 1971, p. 72). In efforts to usurp this tradition, Foucault delineates the connections between the differences. Second, discourses that describe things in static ways revoke other possibilities (Foucault, 1971, p. 73). He elaborates on this point: “The hospital field, for example, did not remain unaffected when clinical discourse was put into relation with the laboratory: the body of rules that governed its working, the status accorded the hospital doctor, the function of his observation, the level of analysis that can be carried out in it, were necessarily modified”(Foucault, 1971, p. 75). Third, formation of discourse should not be regarded as completion of descriptions. In other words, discourse waxes and is to be reformed according to societal transformations and exigencies.
