Some white kids’ miserable college life
3.5 I lost my patience during half of it. I liked the Hulu adoption two years ago at the beginning of the epidemic but then I realize that I was just enjoying the sex and intimate scenes which are both beautiful and not misogynistic. Both qualities are very rare in real life as well as on TV shows.
I appreciate Rooney’s intelligence and skills as a storyteller. She depicted the nuances in relationships so well and her female characters are always intelligent, bold, vulnerable, and strong at the same time. But this is just another love story between two white kids who only know the world outside the Western civilization from media and books, who enjoy a lot of privileges and advantages of their society without realizing it. Rooney’s world is so limited that she still writes about what happened in the yard of Trinity college years after graduation. It is a world where your biggest aim is to get scholarships, either for the financial reward or your intellectual vanity, participate at multiple parties drinking wine and talking politics, afford to hangover without worrying about the consequence, and can spend the summer holiday in Italy! F* I can't remember how many times the characters in this novel are talking with drinks in their hands or shrug their shoulders during conversations. wow, this is so cool because there ia nothing really important, urgent, or serious in their lives. They do have some so-called white guilt from time to time so they discuss refugees and condemn western civilization and racism. But their conversations regarding that remind me of those arrogant and ignorant white bustards in my department.
if this fucking epidemic has told me anything is that there are a lot more serious things and bullshit and miseries happening in this world beyond the circle of intelligent students at Trinity College. Anyway, this is maybe just me, another angry Chinese loser who is jealous of the “miserable” lives of Irish college kids.
