Notes on Sister Outsider
3. Poetry is Not a Luxury,
“feelings were expected to kneel to thought as women were expected kneel to men” (poetry)
4. Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power,更普世,要把真诚的渴望放到生活中,而不只是sex,如果一个人对自己的工作没有真诚的渴望,而只是逐利的话,工作会变成职责或者养家糊口的工具,反之这个人是可以从工作中得到能量
”The principle horror of any system which defines the good in terms of profit rather than in terms human need…Such a system reduces work to a travesty of necessities, a duty by which we earn bread or oblivion from ourselves and those we love. But this is tantamount to blinding a painter and then telling her to improve her work, and to enjoy the act of painting. It is not only next to impossible, it is also profoundly cruel.“
“I wish to raise a Black man who will not be destroyed by, nor settled for, those corruptions called power by the white fathers who mean his destruction as surely as they mean mine. I wish to raise a Black man who will recognize that the legitimate objects of his hostility are not women, but the particulars a structure that programs him fear and despise women as well as his own Black self…”
“It is an important step for a boy, whose societal destruction begins when he is forced to believe that he can only be strong if he doesn’t feel, or if he wins.”
“The strongest lesson I can teach my son is the same lesson I teach my daughter: how to be who he wishes to be for himself.”
“Women of today are still being called uptown to stretch across the gap of male ignorance and to educate men as to our existence and our needs. This is an old and primary tool of all oppressors to keep the oppressed occupied with the master’s concerns.” (The Master’s Tool Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House)
“There is a constant drain of energy which might be better used in redefining ourselves and devising realistic scenarios for altering the present and constructing the future.” (Age, Race, Class, and Sex: Women Redefining Difference)
“Racism, the belief in the inherent superiority of one race over all others and thereby the right to dominance. Sexism, the belief in the inherent superiority of one sex over the other and thereby the right to dominance. Ageism. Heterosexist. Elitism. Classism.” (Age, Race, Class, and Sex: Women Redefining Difference)
“We speak not of human difference, but of human deviance.”
“It is easier once again for white women to believe the dangerous fantasy that if you are good enough, pretty enough, sweet enough, quiet enough, teach the children to behave, hate the right people, and marry the right men, then you will be allowed to co-exist with patriarchy in relative peace, at least until a man needs your job or the neighborhood rapist happens along. And true, unless one lives and loves in the trenches it is difficult to remember that the war against dehumanization is ceaseless.”#But she is the one who live in trenches!!! Omg想哭
“As a tool of social control, women have been encouraged to recognize only one area of human difference as legitimate, those differences which exist between women and men….The oppressed must recognize the master’s difference in order to survive” (The Master’s Tool Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House)
“Seek her face in a man’s eyes”
10. Audre的特点:感受力很强,”everything was like a poem”,其实跟线性逻辑很不一样
