This might be the most contemporary piece of fiction I read so far. By this contemporary, I mean the social media characters are using to interact with others, the way they choose to cope with loneliness, and even the small part about how they reflects on messages from God. Admittedly, I couldn’t find a single part that felt unfamiliar or hard to understand in the workplace scenes in ‘search engine optimisation’. It also made me feel sad that I didn’t expect to relate to what Fred Honey said about “stacked days”. And the long explanation that followed. None of on-screen elements felt deliberately inserted by the writer. On the contrary, it made me realised that fiction can serve as a record of contemporary life, even if it’s based on the writer’s personal observations and maybe only reflects a small group of people or specific habits. I’m wondering what role AI will play in stories in the decades to come. For no particular reason, I find myself resisting its presence in my own life. Perhaps because social media I had already overwhelms me enough. I still don’t even really use TikTok. ×_×
