The book Hotel tells us about stories which took place in the St. Gregory Hotel.
The hotel is owned by Warren Trent (W.T.). But it’s now in troubles. The management is bad and it’s losing money. W.T. has a secretary, Christine Francis. Peter McDermott is the assistant manager of the hotel.
The book begins with 3 troubles in the hotel. And in my opinion, according to the inquiries into those troubles, the book can be divided into 4 stories.
One is about the disturbance on the 11th floor. Peter ordered the head porter to look into it. But in fact it was the head porter Herbie Chandler who gave the room to the youths in order to get the money offered. Things turned out that the 4 boys were drunk and behaved like wild animals. The girl named Marsha failed to run away like the others. When she was calling for help, Aloysius Royce, the manservant of W.T. heard it. He was attacked when he tried to save Marsha and Peter arrives. The girl was the daughter of a tycoon and was afraid of her father. She refused to report it to either the police or her father. Peter agrees. After Peter’s inquiry, he found the truth. He thought of a way to force the boys to admit that. Although he had no rights to fire him, he gave warns to the head porter.
One is about the Duke and Duchess of Croydon. The Duchess said that a waiter insulted the Duke and wanted to talk to W.T.. But in fact it was just the trick the Duchess had thought of to let people believe that they were innocent of the car accident which killed a child and her mother that evening. Unfortunately, they had left some clues. What’s worse, their damaged car was noticed by the greedy chief detective of the hotel—Mr. Ogilvie. He threatened the two that he would go to the police if they couldn’t come to the agreement to give him some money. Finally they came to an agreement that Ogilvie helped drive the damaged car to Chicago and gained 25,000 dollars. Fortunately, with the help of a lot of people, their tricks were discovered by Peter and the police. Because of obvious and strong evidences, Ogilvie was arrested on his way to Chicago and the Duke decided to go the police to give himself up.
Another is about the strange noises in Room 1439 where Albert Wells lived. It was because of Albert Wells’ serious sickness. Christine managed to deal with it well and saved the guy’s life. She thought the Albert was a poor old man without much money. But he turned out to be a very wealthy person who enjoyed a peaceful life and liked simple things. And it’s him who finally bought St. Gregory, protecting it from being bought by O’Keefe.
O’Keefe is the business man who intended to buy the hotel at a cheap price when W.T. was suffering from a financial crisis. And if he succeeded, he would damage the uniqueness of St. Gregory. It would be no longer independent. Luckily, Albert Wells offered to buy the hotel, keeping a position for W.T., the original owner. He would also keep its independence and present character. It was really a good deal! Peter was appointed to the manager of the hotel. O’Keefe was so disappointed and angry that he asked his lover Dodo to leave him.
The book also mentions Keycase Milne, a thief. He collects keys to the rooms in the hotel. Always in the midnight, he would open the doors and slip into the rooms to steal money. He succeeded several times in the hotel and the biggest case was the Duchess’ jewels and 15,000 dollars. He decided to run away from the hotel.
It is in the almost worn out lift when Dodo, the head porter, the Duke and Keycase happened to be together. Unfortunately, the lift lost its control and dived down the well. The Duke died immediately, Dodo was badly hurt and the same with the head porter. Keycase was lucky enough to be not even hurt and finally ran away with the jewels and money he had stolen from the hotel.
The Duchess would be arrested after her husband’s funeral.
Peter and Christine fell in love with each other after all this happened.
O’Keefe decided not to leave Dodo and marry her as soon as she recovers.
It is really a happy ending. Just as a saying goes: one good turn deserves another, and one bad turn deserves another.
The book is written by Arthur Hailey, a famous Canadian author.
To me, the book Hotel is indeed a good one.
First of all, it has a happy ending, which maybe seems not so important to other readers.
Secondly, the stories are organized in a unique way and the characters of the figures are vivid. We can gain something from each figure.
For example, Peter is capable but it seems that he has no chance to realize his dreams. But finally he has got the opportunity. His experiences tell me that as long as you are competent, no matter how you’re treated in the beginning, you will gain what you deserve in the end.
What’s more, we learn that a person cannot be too greedy. Or it will cause troubles.
The book also reminds me of a Korean TV series which is also related to the hotel affairs. The heroine and the hero achieve to live a happy live after all the difficulties as well. It makes me to wonder that if the hotel is really a romantic place. I’m not quite sure of that. But what I’m sure is that the hotel is a place where various things happened. Happiness or sorrows, it is the witness. So it might be a good idea for me to work in the hotel for a while to get a better understanding of different people and humanity.
