Just imagine two fat guys who are no longer young taking up the challenge of hiking the Appalachian Trail (which is more than 2000 mile s). Worse , these two guys are total rookies when it comes to hiking , and horribly unprepared for what lies ahead of them . To make things a bit more alarming , the woods are far from the verdant paradise where you can saunter and hum at the same time . They are actually dense forests full of danger and lethal animals , against which there might be many so-called methods to defend yourself , but none are really practical and easy to apply when emergencies call .
Well , if you think that you are about to read a heroic story about how two unlikely candidates for a daunting task conquered all the difficulties and finally triumphed against all odds , you are wrong, for the author never pretends to make heroes out of himself and his friend Katz , and this is mainly why the book is so funny. Bill Bryson makes fun of all their own inadequacies for the task , their fears , doubts ,complaints and even down-right stupidity . Yes , if he falls into a dire situation , he doesn’t want to invite sympathy but chuckle and laughter. Along with all these , he mixes anecdotes about the AT and accounts about things and people that they met on the way. His is candid with his thoughts and opinions . Although he and Katz never finished the AT according to his original plan(it turned out to be a mission impossible for them) , you would still applaud for them for what they were able to achieve, and above all , Bill Bryson’s sense of humor has guaranteed that it is truly a seriously funny account of “ a walk in the woods”
