This was required summer reading for my teenage son. It is easy to follow the story and the language is everyday, but the story is depressing. He never would have chosen this on his own. And if I were in the library thinking about borrowing it, I probably wouldn't.

Your son will learn at some point that life is full of varying degrees of sad events and colored with multi-layered emotions. To shelter him now from life's trials and tragedies will only lead to shock and great disappointment when he becomes an adult. It would be better to explain the realities of life now to him and demonstrate with confidence and dignity the way an adult deals with those circumstances. I've seen too many young adults go through a great emotional upheaval and disappointment when the realities of the world are finally revealed to them. And some have even expressed distrust of their parents after realizing that they were not told the truth.

This book expresses the reality of those times and one young girl's life during those times which is why it was assigned to your child in school. It's an example of a masterpiece in that it's so sensitively and truly written. Carson McCullers was a great writer and anyone who knows writing knows that. Wouldn't it be better to expose him to great and sensitive writing than to worry about whether or not it's a sad story?

Insulating your child from emotion will never serve him well.
