同呼吸共命运?

翻了几页《欧洲的抗争与民主1650-2000》中译本，再次无语。第一章有一段提纲挈领的话，译本是：

我们试图要解释的是什么？民主化意味着增强政府代理人和政府所管辖之人口同呼吸共命运的平等关系，增强政府所管辖人口对政府人员、资源和政策的有约束力的协商，增强对人口（特别是少数人口）的保护使之免遭政府代理人独裁行动的侵害。一句话，我们谈论的是受保护协商的增减，称高水平的受保护协商为民主。

别扭吗？尤其是那句“同呼吸共命运”。再看原文：

What are we trying to explain? Democratization means increases in the BREADTH and equality of relations between governmental agents and members of the government's subject population, in binding consultation of a government's subject population with respect to governmental personnel, resources, and policy, and in protection of that population (especially minorities within it) from arbitrary action by governmental agents. In shorthand, we can speak of increases oe decreases in protected consultation, calling high levels of protected consultation democratic.

很明显，译者把breadth看成了breath，这原本是再低级不过的错误，只要再念一遍就知道中文是讲不通的。大概因为整本书的译言都是那样诘屈聱牙，所以译者根本也习以为常了，自然不以为意。可怜的梯利。

population难道只能译成“人口”？明摆着说“民众”不就完了嘛。governmental agents非要搞出个“政府代理人”？在中文的语境中政府代理人可就不是政府了嘛，直接说“政府机构和人员”（严格说这个词确实应该包括这两方面才对）不是更准确也更好理解些？后面的personnel倒真不好译成人员，应该指的是“人事”。

另外，我发现一个很简单的判定政治学书籍翻译质量的指标就是cross-sectional，但凡被译成“跨部门”的，就说明译者不论是不是政治学科班出身都是半吊子。这本书当然也是这样了。

唉，无可奈何。
