only if
It grows languid and weary inside after I flipped over the last page. There is no same story line as the last book, Venus Envy, I read a couple weeks ago. It was not until the last depicted Molly’s relationship that the title struck me, which Molly used as a metaphor of woman’s genital that my face cracked into laughter. But things never go as what humans suppose it to be, whenever or wherever in or out of the art.
I thought it was a totally GLBT romance fiction that I could use to squander time as the review on the bottom cover read, "I found myself laughing hysterically, then sobbing uncontrollably moments later", the latter of which I completely blocked out of my mind before I picked up the story. As I went with one and two and three chapters, I cursed all along, “what a stupid I trapped again in the lousy so-called light-hearted romance novel after Venus Envy.”(errrr, which really is a minor disaster, FYI) and I even swore never to buy any of the author books again. Nevertheless, I carried on and found out that it was absolutely my fault AGAIN, the review of which laid its emphasis right on the latter sentence. No wonder they honored this book as the milestone novel of RITA MAE BROWN.
Molly struggled all her way out of the town York, the high school and the university and then the big apple city, New York. I don’t know if it is what the author consciously set the story in or what that New York is a NEW word put befor York which also means the new life for Molly? Apart from Molly as a lesbian, even as a straight woman she has to fight her ass off to climb up to the top of the society. No mention it’s the twenty-first century, during which all human races are claiming to be an embody of equality or liberty. Art does originate from reality. And Molly does live vividly among women throughout the world.
You don’t even bother to argue that women have to strive for the same with much more sweat as it for men. Since the last century, women all over the world have pull together and ask for the equal rights and it did have fruitful results as women getting rights to be in pants, to vote or elect, girls sitting in the same classroom with boys, divorcing or remarrying, competing for any available position out there for men before, etc. However, did they really mean that we women have the very equal rights with men? Negative. The female writers like Pearl Buck got the Nobel Prize, the first female director Kathryn Bigelow got the reward BEST DIRECTOR from the Academy, the first Poet Laureate winner Carol Ann Duffy, even the first lesbian premier in the icy faraway island, whoever her name is. Hurray to them. Alas, do they really count for our victory of the battle for the liberty and equality? Negative again. Even people always bring up the names as Jane Fonda, Susan Sontag, Bovwa or Sagan who gain the perfect renown for their accomplishment in whatever they were digging for. “What else do you women crave for after what you have had now in life?” they would say. Well, in my opinion, what they imply in this sentence is that they feel like giving out enough out of their charity and no more could we actually ask for again and we should never look over our shoulders towards what they’ve had in their hands now, at least never over my shoulder.
Shoot! What men should do is that never to make a big big deal out of a no-big-deal thing like a woman making her way to the premier even if she is a lesbian, never to hit the headline with the zoomed bold letters THE FIRST REWARDED WOMAN DIRECTOR ever in the OSCAR history if the person is not a man, never to brag how “cool” and brave and feminist she is to run all the way to Vietnam if she is an actress who is supposed not to be so politic and ambitious, never to brag about how open-minded the loyal now is to bestow upon Duffy if she’s never a woman and what kills them most is that she’s a lesbian.
Yep, never could women claim the victory if all of them still produce a huge amount of propaganda about how upright and liberal they are when at the same time, feminist or feminism still exist if only there is no opposite word, patriarchy.
Only if we could back to the time Plato depicted in the Symposium.
Only if it would not matter whatever you carry in your physical body.
Only if we could live as whoever we are and whatever we are.
