Slaughter says: I started reading the series in late 2000 or early 2001 right after ASOS was released Honestly, Martin used to be great with his fans. "Not a blog" didn't exist, and he used to update his website once every two or three weeks. He communicated to his fans that ASOS was the end of the first plot arc in ASOIAF, and that there would be a 5 year gap between the events in ASOS and ADWD. As he missed deadlines for ADWD, Martin apologized to his fans, and then explained that the 5 year gap became nearly impossible to write since everything was in flashback. He had to scrap almost 2.5 years of work (between 2000 and 2003), and while some fans were upset, I was actually thrilled that the author explained his problems, leveled with his fanbase, and adjusted our expectations of his progress. Fast forward 2.5 years later to 2005 and the abortion known as A Feast for Crows is announced and released. Martin tells his fans that we're getting the full story of half of the characters. So after a 5 year wait, a half-a-book was delivered, which was obviously disappointing, after the established precedent was an excellent full novel every two years between 1996 and 2000. However, this didn't make the fanbase too upset because Martin indicated in a note at the end of Feast and on his blog, that he was about 60% completed with Dance and that it would be completed sometime in 2006. Unfortunately, Feast turned out to be the full story of the half of the characters were the least interesting. But really, it wasn't just the characters that were the problem, but rather the fact that none of the characters' actions were interrelated, and the novel completely lacked any momentum towards the micro-climaxes he'd masterfully executed in the first three installments. None of the novels really stand alone, but Feast was grotesquely disjointed to the point that I'm not sure where any of the POV's are heading, or what their purpose is to the story as a whole. New threads are partially started, others stagnate completely, and several characters are left hanging (literally) on cliffs which are still unresolved nearly 6 years later. Mr. Martin certainly did not stoop to these types of trashy 'tune in next decade' soap opera ploys in the first three installments. However something else happened in 2005 that did irrevocable damage to ASOIAF -- "Not a Blog". In Martin's first blog post he indicates the reason that it's called "Not a Blog" is because "I don't have time to do a weblog" and "Days, weeks, and even months may go by with no new entries to this journal. If so, that doesn't mean I've died. Just the opposite, actually. It probably means I'm busy doing stuff. It may even mean that I'm writing." To me that means that when he's not blogging he's probably actually working on Dance. Unfortunately, it seems that not only does Martin have time for a blog, he has time for one of the most active blogs on the web frequently posting 3 or 4 times per week, which in his own words pretty much means that he's not working. By early 2008 the blog was in full force, which despite Martin's best intentions, was very frequently updated with his opinions on all kinds of nonsense including NFL football, politics, his attendance at numerous conventions, his international travel schedule, why he feels JK Rowling stole his Hugo award, and served as a merchandising wheelhouse for all ASOIAF branded garbage including replica swords, miniatures, water damaged RPG books, and out of date calendars. Furthermore, Mr. Martin also described in detail all of the other side projects that he was working on instead of focusing on a book that was 8 years late namely editing his Wild Cards novels, working to get other novels that he had written which were out-of-print back into print, editing numerous anthologies, and watching HBO audition tapes for the television adaptation of A Game of Thrones. Also around this time Mr. Martin stopped giving updates on and having a deadline for Dance, instead he just stated that Dance would be completed "soon" and started referring to ASOIAF as 'Kong' -- the gigantic metaphorical monkey on his back. Mr. Martin's attitudes on writing the series also drastically changed. When asked in an interview about his passion for the craft, he stated that he doesn't actually like writing, rather he "enjoys having written". Looking back over the past decade it is crystal clear that Mr. Martin has shown himself to be a man that enjoys only the fruits of his labors, and has no passion for the labor itself. This led to a complete deterioration of the fanbase's goodwill towards Martin. As of January 2008, it had been 8 years since many of us had read a new Jon, Dany, or Tyrion chapter, and now Mr. Martin was telling us that he couldn't be bothered with any more deadlines while at the same time trying to push the garbage on his blog down our throats. Don't pee on me and tell me it's raining. Martin's relationship with his fanbase was further damaged in 2009 with a blog post entitled "To My Detractors". Martin was indignant that some fans were concerned that he might pull a "Robert Jordan" on us. Martin acknowledges that there is dissent among those in his fanbase regarding the progress on Dance and his response to the criticism was to quote the Ricky Nelson song Garden Party: "You see, you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself." In short, Martin said "I do what I want" and gave the middle finger to everyone upset about his attitude towards his fanbase and lack of progress on Dance. Finally in early 2010, Martin hired a personal assistant named Ty to filter/block/remove his "Not a Blog" for any comments that were curious or critical of Martin's work ethic, attitude, or lack of progress on Dance. Literally, Martin is now paying someone to prevent him from hearing anything except praise for his work. And people wonder why the fans are so upset. I don't hate Martin. I don't even want him to write faster. I want him to actually write, because that's what he is, a professional writer. Unfortunately the man is so distracted by dozens of side projects and in love with his new celebrity that I'd be shocked if he'd actually spent more than 10 hours per week in front of the computer working on the book over the past 3 years. Instead he blogs senselessly about football, politics, and "edits" (i.e. he puts his name on stuff without revising it) endless anthologies penned by his buddies. Just look at his Not-a-blog to see what he really values. It would be like telling my boss that I wasn't going to come into work for the next month because I needed to paint my house, build a deck, and catch up on my PS3 games. Technically I was "working", but not on the things that afforded me the lifestyle that I currently have. As much as Martin may be loath to admit it, Wild Cards and his opinions on football didn't put the food on his table, nor did they buy his second house. Maybe July 12th will happen, but I've seen this song and dance (or lack thereof) before, and am highly skeptical. Either way, don't be surprised if Dance is the last portion of the Song that is ever published considering GRRM's pace, lifestyle choices, and general attitude toward the series and fans that contributed towards his success. I just wish the guy would just come out and say that he's getting old and doesn't really feel like writing ASOAIF any longer. That would at least be honest.
