也许和标准意义上的童书相比，麦克尤恩的《梦想家彼得》（The Daydreamer）中所展现想象力算不上天马行空，可能因为其中没有魔法、神器、妖兽、神仙，以及某个可以力挽狂澜的大英雄。这里的主人公Peter只是个普通的小男孩，最大的特长就是走走神做做白日梦。但是这本书于我而言却是出人意料地引人入胜，麦克尤恩高超的叙事技巧将Peter的白日梦与现实世界完美地无缝接合，即使是我这样的成人读者，也没能逃脱狡猾的老麦布下的陷阱：你自信这个世界对你已无神秘可言，甚至会以不屑地态度来看待小Peter，可当你跟随他的视角闯入他的白日梦中，连你自己也无法确信，现实和想象是否存在着一条清晰的界限······还是那个同样的世界，在想象力的包裹下却呈现出另一番奇妙映像。
七个小故事阅毕，Peter略感忧伤地长大，而我却无限惆怅地发现，自己已经几近失掉了进行白日梦的想象力了。这就是麦克尤恩，唠唠叨叨地编织着一层密网慢慢将读者裹住，然后突然将其拆散，读者会被本早已熟悉的现实所惊愕，或者说你惊吓于“无意中听到了你自己”。因为这一点，这本小书就值得每个还存有一点点梦想余烬的成年人一读。
也许有人还会质疑本书所展现的想象力过于单调不够精彩，但我想说，还有什么比这将现实化为想象、二者融为一体的想象力更为强大的呢？
