1. you need to read the English version, very good wording. the chinese translation may lose some flavor in the namalculture, and in the wording.
2. being a polish writer, Kapuscinski position himself superior to Russian, somewhere between the western european and slavian because Poles are western slavians. I am not racial here, just feel interesting. a lot can be explained in this way, in the fight between eastern slavians and western slavians, the fight between poles and the ukranians...
3. a very insightful assessment here in the book, Russia is a half slavian, half turk imperium. solzennijen is trying to make it fully slavic country. Russian considers themselves the third empire, after Rome, and Bezentian, which will last for millenium. however if you read <Ivan's war>, you will see the asiatic side of Russia. people need to understand the Mungol's shade on top of Russians.
4. Kapuscinski obviously loves Armennians with full passion, and he does not like Azerbaijan.
5. excellent stories on Magdan and Yakurt, the hell in earth. a few books disclosed that Nazi actually learned the central camp admin from Soviets. this reminds me of the nortorious labor camp in the east evil empire which still exist today.
6. I personally like the mysterious central asia area. Kapuscinski's adventure to Armennia is quite thrilling.
7. Gorbachev actually was trying to play a game and eventually lost his control in 8.19 incident. yeltsin held conference with Belyrussia and ukranian first, then other republics joined. they announced the Soviets CP is illegal. Gorbachev was merely notified of this result. Medvedev has a book about this.
