What makes a man successful always ruins him. Gatsby’s greediness and persistence brings him achievements in business while makes him addicted in the past love. And this stubbornness of love finally causes his tragedy. I want to use three words to describe Gatsby, they are youth, dream and courage. Gatsby and Daisy fell in love with each other when they were young and simple. This kind of love is always pretty and pure which is branded on their minds——at least branded on Gatsby’s mind. Just like most stories say, they lost to the reality and money. This made Gatsby determine to become rich. Gatsby’s youth brings him unlimited possibilities and eternal passion in love, the past love. Fortunately, he succeeded. Unluckily, he succeeded. With the rise of status, most people will become coldblooded and cruel, for they pay the high price to attains it. Sometimes they even have some relations with gangland and illegal transaction. Gatsby did it, that’s why he is notorious in upper class. What makes him different is his dream, his old dream about love. When he had nothing, his dream was about fortune and love. He got love firstly, thus it became motivation for him to pursue fortune. Gatsby considered love as the most sacred part of his dream as well as the complete sincerity to the past. In his opinion, it is necessary for him to pursue his dream and realize his self-value. However, he lost. “She never loved you, do you hear?””It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved anyone except me!” Gatsby believed in this way. He neglected that Daisy was no longer the young girl. She accepted the reality and became an ordinary lady in upper class. Gatsby was so courageous that he wanted to break the barrier of moral code and upper class. He couldn’t satisfy with what he abtained, for it only brought him endless loneliness. That’s why he took heart of grace to pursue his past love. I do appreciate his courage. From my point of view, the Great Gatsby is not a story about American dream or westerners’ experience in the east. It’s all about youth, dream and courage. Youth is not entirely a time of life but a state of mind. Dream is not a noun to remember but a verb to do. Courage should not be spoken out but be realized. No matter how hard or long the road may be, we should go on, for we are young. And unless we desert our dreams and lose our courage, we will be young.
