These days I intend to read the books from the Pulitzer prize as a foreigner, because of the amazing effect and experience that I got from Pulitzer prize work such as ironweed and the color of purple... And I think the most impressive thing that distinguishes these works and other works that might describe the same social environment, tradition, serious event and problems or issues is that the previous ones actually could more dig deeper about human nature and the changes in those events in deep conscious using different technics such as limited narration, time fluid and conscious fluid in a distinct or fair perspective rather than very omniscient, male-dominant and white perspective, which I actually get bored of.
In the known world, Edward Jones focuses largely about the psychological changes and contrast of conscious in different characters rather than “traditional” author who writes the stories about Black people and the culture before civil war, just uses omniscient narration through all book and try to trigger the sympathy and anger of readers which is pathetic and not working at all. Jones changes the narration through different chapters, which cater to the situation that he wants to create and the feeling of the characters, to express the tension and conscious of the specif character which works very well. For example, when Henry goes back to his parents house and tries to tell them he gets a slave, the narration is limited and creates a intense stress before Henry tells his parents.
Also, the chapters not follow the sequence of time, which is really complicated but very interesting, for the readers can nearly see all the reaction from different characters when someone says Henry is dead.Jones also uses a lot of sarcasm in titles of the chapters and the behavior of the characters. For example, a modest proposal such titles and Augustus gets pissed when Henry gets a slave and he sticks some wood into Henry’s shoulder to tell Henry that he should free slaves for he never gets the pain of slaves. Also, a former slave latter becomes a master who owns slaves is ironic too. And Augustus who gets free after being a slave still finally becomes a slave because of hatred of white people.
And i really not recommend to read the Chines edition because the culture in a long period that before the civil war is the most important factor in this book. So the language between different people who are from different social position and country is very distinguished. Like the language habit of black people is really contrast with white people and that coucil(or whoever, can not spell correctly。。)
It is late now.. And i don’t want to keep writing LOL
