This essay is written to those who always succumb to setbacks and never dare to fight against their fates.
On the first page of Robinson Crusoe, the author said that this novel was dedicated to those teenagers who always relied on parents. I wrote down the words in the first paragraph on a whim. In the long road of our life, there are many hardships and frustrations would block our own pace, so that we cannot move forward and even give up the desire for aliveness. After reading, like a bolt of lightning flashing across the horizon, I really want to share my feelings about this well-known novel.
The author of this novel is Daniel Defoe, who is regarded as“ the Father of British and European novels” and also is famous as the founder of realistic novel in the eighteenth century British enlightenment period. He was born in London, British during the period when British industry developed rapidly and the parties struggled fiercely with conflicts of the religion in a sharp contradiction. Defoe’s life and experiences were no less adventurous than Robinson’s in his novel. However, he overcame the difficulties and wrote this novel——Robinson Crusoe, which made him so well-known that his readers from different generations all over the world.
Robinson Crusoe, was adapted from a real story that a Scottish seaman trapped on an isolated island got rescued after four months. Defoe derived inspiration from it and he determined to make a figure who had the same experience. It happened in the middle of seventeenth century. With the development of bourgeoisie, many people started to search for wealth. Robinson, who was a representative of the emerging capitalist class, an aggressive explorer. Finally, during twenty-eight tough years, he became a real man with the firm mind and positive attitude to the hard life.
In the dark and cold night, there was no star in the sky. Without a beam of smooth moonlight on the peaceful sea, the night sky was filled with clouds and thick fog. It seemed that there was no desire but only despair.
This was the sky above Robinson’s head for nearly twenty-eight years. What he could do to give himself warmth and hope was only the strong will and the firm desire for aliveness. At the very beginning of the novel, when Robinson woke up to find he was on an uninhabited island, he made a plan for his new life without hesitations. I do admire his courage and cannot imagine how horrible and wild I would be when I were in the same circumstance as him. Fear of danger is thousands of times more terrifying than danger itself. There is one sentence from the film The Golden Age, which said “May we have wisdom not to fear shadows in the night, and courage when the day of danger truly dawns.” Perhaps no one will be a strong man until he has a chance to fight against the fate. “ Where there is a will, there is a way.” Why not change it to be “ where there is a determination, there is a real man”.
Looking through the endless forest, sometimes came the beasts’ growl. With a gust of nippy wind from the sea, the bushes were blown like something shaking them. Shades of trees became the only safe places to hide.
Robinson is a man who is fond of not only the life but also the living. During his tough life, bore was like a monster swallowing his time and inhaling his youth. He had to do the same things day after day, and there seemed to be no end. Picking up a rare seed when he was growing crops or finding a new fresh egg when he was feeding hens was his only fun. He never felt bored. He tried his best to make his life interesting and extraordinary every day. When he met Friday, he began to make a friend with this savage and even taught him languages and knowledges. Robinson knew if he did nothing, he would lack the aim at living for the next day. He just learned how to fall in love with the life, and how to make their every day romantic.
I had read this novel in Chinese for lots of times. The first time I met with this novel was my twelve-year-old birthday, when my father put it on my small hands with a warm smile. At that young age, I could not understand how heavy it was. On the first page of this precious gift, it had a sentence by my father——“ Wish the hero will teach you to be a real man”. I could not help to read the original. During this time, I felt that I faced the author and saw his words in his mind. I never found I stood so close to Robinson. Now I am not that young kid anymore. I love this gift and this great “teacher” who teach me to treasure the passion and desire to my life.
Rainbow always appears after a heavy rain; sunshine always shines after the dark evening. When the wave slaps the golden beach, you can find the beautiful pearl, shimmering with a dazzling intensity——that is the true love for the life.
