Downton Abbey is a successful British TV series show from PBS, which has won six Emmys so far. The reasons of success for this show are quite a few such as attractive background of history, the layouts of scenes and the theatricality of the settings. This research paper focuses the main reasons of the success of Downton Abbey and the social realistic meaning and cultural connotation reflected by this show.
According to Palmer Sally (2013), Downton Abbey is regarded as the legacy from Austen, for there are plenty of similarities between Downton Abbey and Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen. For example, Palmer Sally points out that the most obvious similarity of both show is the setting of cultural background. Palmer Sally suggests that Downton Abbey is successful because of being treated as adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
The same is found in other study, Degeyter Heather demonstrates that those novel and literature that adapted by the typical literature from Dickens and Austen can go beyond the limit of geography, races and gender. Additionally, Degeyter Heather reckons that the plots of abortion, rape and familial abuse in Downton Abbey reflects the discrimination of women at that age and suggests the development of sexual liberation for women (2016).
Likewise, Nesbitt Jennifer suggests that the changing of British women’s status in the early 20th century is reflected in Downton Abbey. Nesbitt Jennifer also indicates that the audience of Downton Abbey started to rethink the conflicts of social reality through the disadvantages of the inequity and hierarchy showed in this show.
Also, research has showed that others reason of success of Downton Abbey from other studies. For instance, the synergistic effect between television and publication is regarded as the major reason for success of Downton Abbey as seen in Nesbitt Jennifer ‘s study (2014) and West Nancy’ s study (2015). In both studies, the relationship between television show and its audiences is supposed to be the main reason why Downton Abbey is so popular around the world. Thus, the writers of television will looking for inspiration from the reality in the coming future.
