7 Disagreement settled in Bambuti hunting group
The author of the book describes a moment that he found himself furthest removed from the Pygmies: Sindula, the most prized animal, was caught by those people, and they use spears to kill it. They stood around in an excited group, pointing at the dying animal and laughing; the author said: " it was at times like this that I found myself furthest removed from the Pygmies."
Another time is the author have seen Pygmies singeing feathers off birds that were still alive, explaining that the meat is more tender if death comes slowly. And the hunting dogs, valuable as they are, get kicked around mercilessly from the day they are born to the day they die.
When the author talked to the pygmies about their treatment of animals, they laughed at author, and said, "the forest has given us animals for food----should we refuse this gift and starve?"
8 living environment;
In the northeast corner of Belgian Congo, almost exactly in the middle o fthe map of Africa, and lies the Ituri Forest. A silent tropical rain forest. To the people who live in there, the forest is full of sounds. The world os the forest is a closed, possessive world, hostile to all those who do not understand it. BaMbuti are the real people of the forest, they just like the son of forest. They are familiar with everything about forest, and the forest feed them.
9 how do these people hunt;
They need to do some preparation work, and man have the more preparation than woman, like man need to prepare their net. The poor preparation and coiling can spoil the chances of all the others;
In normal times there is often a dance before everyone departs for the hunt;
The "Fire of the Hunt" is also important;
Hunting, for a pygmy group, is a co-operative affair---net-hunting particularly. Even those people that hunt mainly with bow and arrow, hunt not as individuals, but for the goup as a whole. For the hunting it is impossible to hunt alone. Man, woman, and children all have to co-operate if the hunt is to be successful;
