这本书多层叙述与诗意的语言无非是加分的。故事主角11岁的Pecola受到了来自家庭学校与陌生人的冷漠，父亲的施暴，认为根源在自己丑陋，pray for blue eyes 把白人的审美作为救赎无疑是最大的悲剧，直至最后发疯。
书中有两章分别讲述了父母亲的成长经历，母亲Pauline少女时寄托romance，婚后生活乏味，加上旁人的刺激又盲目追求beauty。把白人雇主的认可作为最大的成就，却忽略家人。这样肤浅糊涂的妈，与后面女儿遭受父亲强暴自然是有关系的。父亲Cholly 从小被父母抛弃，跟随姑姑长大，姑姑死后去寻找生父却得不到认可，无爱的人即使进入婚姻最后还是drink drink fight。现在疑惑的是作者写父母的遭遇难道是为强暴找到历史根源？
书里面除了Pecola 被父亲施暴，故事叙述者的姐姐Frieda 被房客侵犯，解梦老头也名正言顺猥亵女孩。。。半世纪之前的故事依然有现实对照
