This is a story about a smart girl, with a pretty face and lots of luck.
As a little girl, her life was changed because of her pretty grey eyes and her poetic way of talking. While her older sister, who's not so pretty nor as as bright, was sold to a whore house.
Then as a young lady, her pretty grey eyes made such a great impression on the Chairman that he basically helped her to start her career.
As a young Geisha, her pretty grey eyes and her cleverness captured Nobu. So go figure...
In a way, she is Nobu with a pretty face and soft tone of talking. Her character is what attracted Nobu in the first place. Like Nobu, she knows exactly what she wants - the Chairman. Like Nobu, she is patient. Nobu waited years for her. And she waited years for the Chairman. Like Nobu, she is cruel to everyone except the few she cares. And that's exactly what she did to get the Chairman.
Life gives her plenty, still she wants more. She expect others to be nice to her, but she does not want to do the same in return. She used Pumpkin's kindness to get information to take down her enemy and made Pumpkin collateral damage in the meanwhile. Then she blame's Pumpkin's downfall on fate, and soon forgot about Pumpkin all together. Years later when Pumpkin was brought up in a conversation, she went to Pumpkin to 'renew their friendship'. She accuses Pumpkin of being cruel and wonder what she did to deserve Pumpkin's betray. I felt this part to be so funny, especially when you recall her feelings when everything went well for Pumpkin in their early days...
As her feeling about her father. At first she was so excited about the prospect of being adopted by the business man, she couldn't wait to be away of the old wrinkled men. Then after being sold, her feeling for her father just poured out...
Anyway if you plan to read this book to get a glimpse of the life as a Geisha, go ahead. But if you plan to get some amusement from the book, I'd advise you to find a another one.
