When the author wrote the plot that Kaizong and Mimi went to the shore to see the secret beautiful night view, he started with their conversations. Their talk about waste girl, fake foreigner and the “good dog” triggered Kaizong’s feeling to Mimi because Mimi was not like other waste people at all. She always kept her curiosity about the world and kept her mind innocent and bright. Her difference from others attracted Kaizong also because Kaizong was different, too. Kaizong was called fake foreigner by local people and didn’t know much about this land of his father’s generation, although he was literally born there and his roots were there. They both had identity issues.
And then the plot goes to the scenery there. It was sure a beautiful night and they shared this secret of going there together. However, the more beautiful and romantic the view was, the worse the next was going on. But before they got to the Tide Gazing Beach, they talked a lot and the key word “soul” showed up which I think is an important concept of this fiction. It seems everyone has his or her soul but to some degree for some of them it equals to none because the soul contains nothing good or meaningful. Also here the word “soul” is a foreshadowing of what is to follow later on (like that Mimi’s change actually is the soul’s change.)
When they arrived at the Tide Gazing Beach, the terrible stories behind the beach present a sharp contrast against the night view they saw before. It was also striking but never beautiful. It was dark and piled up with lives and history or somewhat tradition there. And the story of Mecha-Ah Rong plays an important role because it on one hand gives us some general information about the mecha which is the one Mimi would use to revenge in following part, and on the other hand reveals the status of women and kids especially those from other places and without parents. Ah Rong was kind of forced to be a white mouse to get into the mecha and got killed, and this kind of fate always landed on poor people, because Mimi as a waste girl from other places was also suffered by fate, being raped. In contrast, the boy infected by virus is much luckier than them, lying safely and waiting for his father to save him no matter how many other lives could be affected, just because he is local and his father is powerful.
