In The Legacy, Woolf masterfully depicted the transformation of Angela from the perspective of her husband. When trapped in the house, women were “the angels in the house”. As the thought of pursuing their own career occurred to their mind, nevertheless, they would begin to think independently and strive to have “a room of their own”. Then the heroine chose to commit suicide when the conflict could not be addressed. Angela, unlike other mindless women, was fortunate in that her privacy was valued, her woman identity was awoken, and her shackles were broken. The diary witnessed Clandon’s reflection from nostalgia to fury, showing how it violated his male dignity. The legacy left by Angela was a blow to the patriarchal system, a defiance against male values, which shook men’s absolute rule over women. However, Angela’s life was also tragic for she, rather than find other solutions, chose to terminate her life to emancipate herself.
