Touching yet something is missing

This is probably the first time that I finished a book during flights: the four-hour each way journey to and from Shenyang and my newly acquired noise cancelling earphones made this happen.

I would say, by and large, I love this book. Ishiguro is an amazing storyteller: he constructed a world where clones are brought into for the sole purpose of harvesting their organs to cure previously incurable diseases and their lives ‘complete’, as the writer put, when they fulfil this mission. One would naturally ask the question that within such a system whether the clones shall be treated the same as human beings and if not, to what extent and that’s what the book is about through the life stories of Kathy, Tommy and Ruth with Kathy as the narrator.

As much as I love the writing of Ishiguro, I do feel that the characters in the story fall a bit flat. One may certainly argue that it’s the writer’s intention and the system is to blame for that. After all, if we know we are gonna die young and there is nothing we could do to avert the ultimate ‘completion’ , anything we try to work on, any dream we have, any feeling we show all seem to be a lost cause.

I will definitely re-read this but I am gonna follow my heart this time and give it 8/10 and I recommend it nonetheless.
