1,I explained ,winefully, how we did not do the things we wanted to do; we never did such things.
2"Have you ever loved someone?"
3，“He didn't have a sabre cut. They blew him all to bits.”
4,“What's to stop it?”
“It will crack somewhere.”
5,Any frescoes were good when they started to peel and flake off.
6 I knew I did not love catherine Barkley nor had any idea of loving her.
7“Do you always know what people think?”
8,“How you like the goddamn war?”
9,The priest was good but dull. The officer was not good but dull. The wine was bad but not dull.
10, “It would not finish it if one side stopped fighting. It would only be worse of we stopped fighting "
“It could not be worse. There's nothing worse than war”
11,“When people realize how bad it is they cannot do anything to stop it because they go crazy”
12.There's no finish to a war.
13,“There is a class that controls a country that is stupid and does not realize anything and never can. That is why we have this war.”
“Also they make money out of it”
“Most of them don't”said Passini."They are too stupid. They do it for nothing .For stupidly."
14,“Did you do any heroic act?”
“No,”I said “I was blown up while we were eating cheese ”
15,I try always to hope but sometimes I cannot.
16“What you tell me about in the nights. That is not love.that is only passion and lust. When you love you wish to do things for.You wish to sacrifice for.You wish to serve.”
“I don't love”
17,“You "ll die then.Fight or die,That's what people do.They don't marry.”
18,But life isn't hard to manage if there's nothing to lose.
19,But people do.They love each orther and they misunderstand on purpose and they fight and then suddenly they aren't the same one
20,But at my back I always hear Time's winged chariot hurring near
21,I didn't not say anything.I was always embarrassed by the words sacred glorious ,and sacrifice and the expression in vain.
22，If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them,so of course it kills then. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially .If you are none of these you can be sure it will you too but there will be no special hurry.
23，You could not go back.If you did not go forward what happend ?You never got back to Milan. And if you got back to Milan what happend?
24,The killing came suddenly and unreasonable.
25,You do not know how long you are in a river when the current moves swiftly.
26,Feeling no longer alone waking in the night to find the other one there, and not gone away.
27,We could feel alone when we were together, alone against the others.
28,The night can be a dreadful time for lonely people once their loneliness has started.
29,“You don't fell like criminal ,do you?”
“No,not be with you”
30，“I dont know about the soul”
31,They do not grow wise. They grow careful.
32,I have always expected to be devout.
33,At morning. Catherine was asleep and the sunlight was coming in through the window. The rain had stopped and I stepped out of bed and across the floor to the window. Down below were the gardens, bare now but beautifully
regular, the gravel paths, the trees, the stone wall by the lake and the lake in the sunlight with the mountains
beyond. I stood at the window looking out and when I turned away I saw Catherine was awake and watching me.
34,THAT fall the snow came very late. We lived in a brown wooden house in the pine trees on the side of the
mountain and at night there was frost so that there was thin ice over the water in the two pitchers on the dresser
in the morning.
35,when I was undressed I opened the windows and saw the night and the cold stars and the pine trees below the
window and then got into bed as fast as I could. It was lovely in bed with the air so cold and clear and the night
outside the window.
36,They threw you in and told you the rules and the first time they caught you off base they killed you. Or they killed you gratuitously like Aymo. Or gave you the syphilis like Rinaldi. But they killed you in the end. You could count
on that. Stay around and they would kill you.
37,Once in camp I put a log on top of the fire and it was full of ants. As it commenced to burn, the ants swarmed out and went first toward the centre where the fire was; then turned back and ran toward the end. When there
were enough on the end they fell off into the fire. Some got out, their bodies burnt and flattened, and went off not knowing where they were going. But most of them went toward the fire and then back toward the end and swarmed on the cool end and finally fell off into the fire. I remember thinking at the time that it was the end of the world and a splendid chance to be a messiah and lift the log off the fire and throw it out where the ants could get off onto the ground. But I did not do anything but throw a tin cup of water on the log, so that I would have the cup empty to put whiskey in before I added water to it.I think the cup of water on the burning log only steamed the ants.
